Lifelong Friends Always Find a Way

Our youngest son, Luke, and Lauren Johnson hung out together before they were born. Their moms were pregnant together and they hung out together. Luke came into the world exactly 2 weeks before Lauren. Lauren turned 21 years old today.

It is hard to believe that Luke and Lauren are now adults.

They have been best friends since before they can even remember. And I have a feeling they will still be friends when they turn 91.

How close were they growing up?

They literally took naps in the crib together when they were babies and played together almost every single day as they grew up.

As they started to get older they even went to the bathroom together.

That is about as close as you can get.

When they turned 16 their moms had a big birthday party for them. We made a special video of their first 16 years together and showed it that night. Of course I wrote a little poem for them.

Luke and Lauren have been best friends for a very long time.
I will tell you about them and I’ll try to make it rhyme.
It was in September of 1985. A special relationship was about to start.
They were born in the same hospital and only two weeks apart.

Their moms spent a lot of time together and were “best friends” one would say,
I think they found out they were pregnant almost the same day.
They would sometimes call each other to see which one that day was the sickest.
They would also put their bellies together to see whose was the biggest.

Who would go first? That was the big question for these pregnant friends.
In the meantime they were shopping for stuff like strollers and toys and playpens.
After nine months of fun and guessing, Luke came first – in a Macon delivery room
Lauren was at the hospital that day too – although in her mother’s womb.

Lauren finally came two weeks later – we had no idea what was about to begin.
All their lives they’ve done everything together – you would think they were kin.
They played in the playpen together and were in the same stroller more than once.
They took naps together and dirtied their diapers together. That happened a bunch.

They crawled on the floor together before they learned how to walk.
They communicated with each other before they knew how to talk.
Sometimes they cried together when things did not go their way.
But they laughed and played together almost every single day.

They started to school together and did homework together. That was not very fun.
They also went to Florida on vacation together and played in the sun.
They actually did all kinda fun things together – they really did a lot.
Lauren would even go to the bathroom with Luke when he sat on the pot.

As they grew older they shared secrets together the way best friends always do.
They solved problems for each other and talked for hours on the phone too.
The first year Luke went to Westfield – that year something was really wrong.
For the first time in their lives they were separated but it didn’t last long.

Last year they were back together. It was not an accident and definitely not by chance.
They even helped each other get dates for the big homecoming dance.
They would never date each other. For them that would be very sick you see.
But in 50 years when most have lost touch, best friends they will still be.

Luke and Lauren look after each other. This friendship you just cannot touch.
Have you ever wondered why Lauren asks Kristen to spend the night so much?
They have been best friends for 16 years and I hope I have shared some light.
They are celebrating their 16th birthday and they are glad you are here tonight.

That little poem was written five years ago.

Luke and Lauren don’t get to see each other much these days. Those things happen as life moves on.

But they will have lunch tomorrow.

Lifelong friends always find a way to do those sort of things.

There is a lesson in their lunch date for all of us.
