A Special Holiday

It is hard to believe another April Fool’s Day is about over. We have been looking forward to this day for so long and it gets here…. and it’s over.

It can be rather depressing to wait so long for such a moment and then things get quiet and back to normal at our house so quickly.

After a long night of wild partying, Kathy and I woke up early this morning and cooked a big breakfast and exchanged gifts in our footed pajamas with my mother in law. We were disappointed because the rest of our family could not be here this year. Thankfully they did send their regrets.

After we ate and exchanged gifts, my family (those who were present) gathered to hear the April Fool’s story again. I explained that in the 16th century France celebrated the New Year just like we do today except they partied on April 1. In 1562, Pope Gregory changed the calendar to the one we use today and from then on, the New Year began on January 1st. I explained that some smarter folks didn’t agree with the Pope and they ignored the new calendar and kept celebrating on April 1st. Everyone else called them April fools and played tricks on them.

After playing poker for a couple of hours, watching a R rated movie and singing all three verses of Fools Rush In, my wife and my mother in law had a few Margaritas and we got ready for church. I was wondering how in the world I would get them in the church building without others noticing the staggering state they were in. I decided on using our wheel barrel. It was a little weird for me pushing them down the aisle but at least the preacher didn’t notice that they couldn’t walk straight.

I have never heard my mother in law sing as loud as she did this morning. And I was totally embarrassed when she took a fifty out of the offering plate when it went by. She wanted to join the church this morning but I talked her out of it. I told her the 10% tithes they charge there seemed a little high to me and I wanted us to look around for some lower rates. Thank goodness she thought that was a good idea. She can get really loud and boisterous when things don’t go her way. I just didn’t want my friends to hear her use ugly language.

When I was pushing my wife and mother in law out of church after the service several people commented on how unique her singing sounded but nobody even mentioned the fifty she had sticking out of her blouse. I breathed a sigh of relief about that. I stopped by a Handy Quicky after church and got them both some Tylenol. Then we took the fifty and all had lunch together at a local BBQ joint.

Anyway, that is enough about our special day. I took the Fool Tree down this afternoon and put all the wrappings in the glad bags and took them out for the trash man to pick up tomorrow. Things are pretty much back to normal at our house. But as always it was a great holiday.

I hope all of you celebrated this special day with your family. But more importantly, I hope you did not forget to remember the reason we celebrate.

Happy April Fools Day.
