Get Here

My very pregnant daughter in law (pictured here with my wife and her mother in law) went to the doctor the other day and the news is that Taylor Reese is getting ready to come out of her Mommy’s tummy to join us.

I’m sure this is not normal but every time I think about it I get tears in my eyes. Good lord I am a softie.

The doctor said she is 90 per cent effaced. I have been reminded that effacement is the thinning of the cervix. I understand that the cervix starts off being about 2 inches long. If she is 50% effaced that means it is only 1 inch long. So at 90%, her cervix must me really short now.

Tami is also 1 centimeter dilated. I’m not a doctor but I’ve played golf with a few over the years. “Dilation and Effacement” is defined as being the first stage of labor. But Kathy warned me that she was dilated for two or three weeks before she had our first baby.

I can tell you that I’ve been looking carefully at my calendar to see where I will be the next couple of weeks. And I am trying to figure out how to make alternate plans just in case.

I’m sure Taylor will be singing that familiar song to her Papa the minute she is born:

You can reach me by railway, you can reach me by trailway
You can reach me on an airplane, you can reach me with your mind
You can reach me by caravan, cross the desert like an Arab man
I don't care how you get here, just- get here if you can.

You can reach me by sailboat, climb a tree and swing rope to rope
Take a sled and slide down slow, into these arms of mine
You can jump on a speedy colt, cross the border in a blaze of hope
I don't care how you get here, just- get here if you can.

Taylor, you just come on just as soon as you get ready.

Your Papa will be on the way.

He is completely dilated and 100% effaced.

And grinning from ear to ear.

I can’t wait.

Bruce, It won't matter where you are when she joins us.I called Donna in the delivery room and spoke to Katie on the phone from I don't remember where when she was just minutes old. As Melanie said in Gone With The Wind, the happiest days are when babies are born. As you know, they realize just how much we love them a little later on anyway. We will all celebrate with you and all the Goddards when she arrives. We are also waiting with anticipation for the arrival of our little bundle of joy. These are exciting times, aren't they?!
