Contentment

I am aware that many of you who read this have experienced much rain in the last month or so. I have traveled in Oklahoma and Texas recently where rain has been plentiful. But where I live in Georgia we have been in a severe drought. Absolutely parched.

But the rain came today. And it has been raining all day. And I don’t know when I have appreciated it any more. As I type this the earth is being watered here. And the sound of it is wonderful.

I can’t help but be reminded of some great truths.

Some days are sunny and some days are rainy. It has always been like that and we absolutely need both. We could not survive if we did not have both. As individuals we have moments of wonder and moments of gloom. Days of victory and days of defeat. Seasons of happiness and seasons of sadness. We could not survive if we did not experience both.

We have no control on when the sunshine comes and when the rain comes. If we did have control we would make a royal mess of it. Neither do we have control of our seasons of joy or our seasons of pain and heartache. God brings both into our lives in His timing and for our good.

God causes the sun to shine on the righteous and the unrighteous. And he causes the rain to fall on the evil and the good. That means that good times will come to the evil and as well as the good. And painful times will come to the righteous and the unrighteous. Thankfully we don’t need to feel guilty when things are not going our way and we certainly don’t need to be prideful when things are going our way. It can all change in an instant and it is not because God is mad with us.

And we can learn to be thankful for it all. Sometimes our plans get changed. And we end up doing what we never thought we would do. But it is all part of the big plan. And there is much contentment in that thought.

There have many times in my years that I have been very thankful for a sunny day. And there have been many times when I have been thankful for a rainy day. The older I get the more I’m beginning to learn to be thankful for both. There is much contentment in that thought.

And there is much contentment as I hear the rain on our roof tonight.
