A Little More Focus

I almost missed my flight today but I just had to pay a quick visit to the “Focus on the Family” campus in Colorado Springs before I left town. I couldn’t believe what I saw.

I have had the amazing opportunity to stand before an awful lot of groups the last dozen or so years and talk about the incredible investment my parents made in me and my concern for the institution of the family in our great country. Those truths hit home with folks in every audience every time I speak no matter where I am speaking. There is just something very right about dads and moms spending time with their sons and daughters and investing their lives in them.

Dr. James Dobson gets criticized from many folks but I can tell you I am not in that crowd. Dr. Dobson and Focus on the Family have done more for the family than anybody in my lifetime for sure. I literally had a lump in my throat as I walked through the welcome center located on their 49 acre campus. This man and his ministry have made a difference in our world. And that kind of stuff lights my wood. We all were put here to make a difference. He has done that and his work continues.

Although James Dobson does not receive a salary from Focus on the Family he and his wife are independently wealthy. He has been criticized for that as well. Again he gets no criticism from this blogger. A man with his vision and his talent should have earned some money along the way. More power to him.

And more power to Focus on the Family.

I have a new appreciation for what they are accomplishing after visiting there today. I even spent a few minutes in their wonderful bookstore. They have every book you can imagine that has to do with the family.

They are missing one book though. I think I will mail them one. They have a mail room that deals with 50,000 pieces of mail a day. I wonder how long it would take them to discover “View from a Hearse.” If they like it and order a few copies, I will certainly let you know. But I won't be holding my breath.

But one thing is for sure. We all could use a little more focus on the important people in our lives.
