She Ain't Doing So Bad Herself

The little boy we used to call “Lukey Dukey” turned 22 today. Since he is our youngest that means ole’ dad feels kinda old today. I fully realize Luke is getting too old to listen to my fatherly advice anymore but I think I should go on record and give him one more piece of advice.

Here it is.

YOU HAVE LOST YOUR EVER LOVIN’ MIND IF YOU DON’T MARRY DREW WATKINS.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not trying to speed anything up. Y’all are both in college and you need to get through all that because love never did pay the bills. And you have to be gainfully employed to take care of that little matter.

Somewhere in the big scheme of things, God chose to do you an extreme favor when he sent this jewel of a gal to you. I thought that this morning when she surprised you and stopped by the house on the way to church to bring you a birthday present complete with all the balloons. I thought it again when I took this picture of you two this afternoon in our back yard. And the truth is I think it each and every time I see you two together (which is very often).

I have no idea what you will do the rest of your life. I don’t know what kind of job you will have and don’t know how much money you will make. But I am absolutely positive you have already done the best days work you will ever do in your life when you talked this girl into being your girl. And all the money in the world will never compare to what she will be worth to you in your life.

She is absolutely fine china. Don’t ever forget to keep treating her as such and treat with extreme care. She is God’s gift to you.

On this your 22nd birthday I just wanted to remind you that you are doing really good. And in my very biased opinion, Drew ain’t doing so bad herself.

Happy Birthday Dude.

Thank you, Daddy. Your advice is good. I'd be a fool if I ever stopped listening to it.

PS: All birthdays after the landmark of 21 are just another year..... which STINKS!

Bruce, I can't tell you how much it meant to see you and hear you speak at BETHEL hopegivers. I wasn't sure what to expect. I know we have shared lots of conversations about ambulance and coroner calls over the year, but those things were usually in times of crisis, so laughing was not usually a part of it.. Thanks for the laughs and the tears. Many memoreies were brought back. I know God's love is a part of my life and now I know he is part of yours. Your sister in Christ, Linda Wright Smith. P.S. Michael is enjoying the memories of Reynolds, also.
