Simply an Angel

(Cabo San Lucas, Mexico) This morning about 3AM Cabo, Mexico time and about 5AM Georgia, USA time my blackberry started vibrating. I have a strong feeling that heaven started vibrating about 30 minutes earlier when Jessie Mae King, PO Box 1, Reynolds Georgia, made her grand appearance.

I’m not sure how they do it in heaven but I am quite positive a huge celebration began there this morning. I can picture the heavenly choir gathered and the trumpets sounding louder than maybe they have ever sounded. Maybe the door swung open and the huge throng of saints from ages past stood on their feet with loud applause as Jessie Mae King was escorted down the aisle. If my mom and dad were not escorting her I am positive they were very close by.

Jessie Mae King was escorted down to the front row. I know that because my daddy always told me that Jessie may not have had a lot of riches on earth but she would be on the front row in heaven. If I heard that one time, I heard it a thousand times. So I know she is on the front row. And if they hand out rewards in heaven, she is having a difficult time counting them all today. In other words she has received a truck load.

For many years Jessie wore hand me down clothes. Today she is clothed with majesty. For many years she and her family lived in a one room shack. Today she is walking around an indescribable mansion that was prepared for her before the beginning of time.

For most of her life she was a servant. She cooked and cleaned house and help raise other folks’ children. I was one of those children. And so were my children. The Jesus she talked about in almost every sentence that came out of her mouth has looked at her in the eye and said those words that she has been longing to hear: “Well done thy good and faithful servant.”

I think of her every single time I hear the story of Jesus washing his disciple’s feet.

I am reminded that the evidence of love is humility.

For the record, next to my parents, Jessie Mae King impacted my life more than any person I have ever known. She led a very simple life but one of the most profound I have ever known. She was simply an angel.

And I have no idea where I would be if not for this angel.

Our loss is heavens gain.

Jessie was an amazing person. Everytime I was with her, I felt that I was in the presence of the Lord. She will be missed; however, her sweet spirit will be with us forever. I just so happy that she taught Kathy how to make beef stew. Jessie's was the best and Kathy's is close to it. I can hear her now saying, "Brucie, this place in beautiful."

While I know the loss of Jessie Mae King is real and heavy on your heart as she was near and dear to 3 generations or more of your family, she is a loss to many of us, your faithful readers, as you have made her come alive in your stories. We believers are comforted to know that Jessie Mae is in a far better place now, and one she so justly deserves. I hope to see her one fine day and in the meantime may her memory continue on! You have lost one of the cast but have kept the character.

I, too, am very blessed to have had Jessie as the other mother in my life. I don't remember a time before she became part of our family. She taught me so much about so many things, and she showed me with her life about those holy things she often spoke of. I will forever be grateful to God for allowing her to be part of our family. Jessie never spoke unkindly of anyone, she always saw the good in everyone, and she had a gift for accepting people right where they are. One could not be in her presence and come away untouched. Mama and Daddy were thrilled yesterday morning when they saw her entering the gate of heaven. They have a lot of catching up to do!!

I was out of town over the weekend and didn't know anything about Jessie's passing until this morning. I am so greatly sorry for your loss and everyone who knew her have lost. She was a smiling face and a kind word for everyone. I really don't know any other way to describe her except the way you did, "Simply an Angel".

As a faithful reader who only ever read about Jessie, I think anonymous above hit the nail on the head. I am so sorry for the sorrow your family is feeling right now. I knew there had to be reason for the beautiful weather lately, God is obviously happy to have her with Him.

Since reading your book earlier this year I had been meaning to write and ask what happened to Jessie. I didn't know if she was still alive since the book was published. Well, I just read your blog entry on 11/2. It made me cry, but I am also happy because I will meet her some day in Heaven! LL in SC
